More Than a Number: Why Listening Matters in Financial Planning

As someone who serves clients every day, I can’t help but notice how I’m treated when roles are reversed and I’m the client. I often find myself asking simple questions: Why do I like my dentist so much? Why do I actually look forward to seeing my eye doctor?

The answer, I’ve realized, is because they truly know me.

Having lived in Maryville my whole life, I’ve built relationships in this community. When I walk into those offices, it feels personal. They remember my name. They ask about my family. They know my kids. And more importantly—they listen. I don’t feel like I’m just another chart in a file or another number in line. I feel heard.

I’ve even noticed the same principle when it comes to restaurants. If my wife and I are planning a date night, we don’t want to sit in a booth at a franchise where everything feels uniform and rushed. We’d much rather go to a local spot where the pace is a little slower, the service more attentive, and the food made with care. It’s not just about the meal—it’s about the experience.

That’s exactly how we approach serving clients at Rather & Kittrell. Over the years, we’ve worked hard to create an environment that feels more like family than a transaction. Our philosophy is deliberate, thoughtful, and personal. The reality is that no two people share the same story, the same dreams, or the same vision for the future. Two couples could walk through our doors at the exact same age with the exact same income, and their financial plans could still look completely different. Why? Because their lives are different.

That’s why we start by listening. Our role isn’t to hand out cookie-cutter solutions. It’s to hear your story, understand what matters most to you, and then design a plan that fits your life. At the end of the day, our clients are the stars of the show. We’re simply the guides—helping chart the course so they can live the lives they’ve imagined.
