The Veteran Next Door

Every Veterans Day, we pause to honor those who have worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. We think of parades, folded flags, and the solemn rows of headstones that mark the price of freedom. Yet, among us—quietly raking lawns, coaching Little League, or helping a neighbor fix a mailbox—live the unknown veterans whose stories are never told.

Mick Cunningham was that guy on the next street over where I grew up. Coach Cunningham was the 8th grade math teacher and the high school varsity basketball coach. I experienced both with him and it took my dad explaining to me what Coach had been through as a young man in the Korean conflict to really appreciate him. Thirty years before I knew him, in the frozen reaches of Korea he was involved in some of the worst fighting of the war, coming home with severe frostbite that removed part of a foot and then he quietly went about raising a family.

To us he was kind and compassionate yet demanding at the chalk board and on the court. He expected much and we gave it because of the strong example of how he lived his life. He built us into a team and did not tolerate individualism wrecking the successful teams that were built. And he never said anything about being a Marine, a veteran, a combat veteran. He simply looked after others and quietly cared well for them.

You may pass a Mick Cunningham at the grocery store or wave to another on your morning walk. You’d never guess what they’ve seen or carried. They don’t talk about the long nights on foreign soil, the friends they lost, or the weight of responsibility that never truly leaves them. They just keep living—steady, humble, and kind. Their service, however, still echoes in how they live—with integrity, patience, and a quiet sense of duty. They know what it means to sacrifice, and they show it not through words or medals, but through the way they care for others.

So this Veterans Day, look around your neighborhood. Say thank you—not just to the ones in uniform, but also to those who once were. You may never know their full story, but your gratitude will mean more than you can imagine. Because sometimes, the bravest people are the quietest among us.
