What Do I Do Once I Retire?
11.25.2024
I’ve never had trouble coming up with a list of blessings I’m thankful for—family, friends, a great employer, and more.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I like to take a moment to reflect on how grateful I am for these. Yet, almost like clockwork, those moments of gratitude are quickly followed by questions like, “What’s next? How do I achieve my next goal?” I realize I may not be alone in this constant chase for the next accomplishment. Recently, though, I came across a parable that made me stop and think.
A successful American businessman on vacation in a third-world country meets a local fisherman. The fisherman is relaxing by his boat, having caught just enough fish for his family’s needs. The businessman asks why he doesn’t fish more and earn more money. The fisherman replies that he has enough to support his simple lifestyle—he enjoys his days with family, takes long naps, and spends his evenings playing music with friends.
The businessman suggests that if the fisherman caught more fish, he could sell the extra catch, buy more boats, and eventually build a business empire. After years of hard work, the fisherman could retire with enormous wealth.
The fisherman responds by asking, “And what would I do once I retire?” The businessman replies, “You could spend your days with your family, take long naps, and enjoy your evenings with friends.”
The fisherman replied, “Isn’t that what I am already doing?”
As we reflect on the blessings in our lives during the holiday season, the parable reminds us that true fulfillment isn’t found in the endless pursuit of wealth or the next achievement—it’s often already within our grasp. Imagine living a life of contentment, not just in moments of reflection, but every day, with what you already have.
