Patience, Markets, and a Father’s Words That Still Ring True
06.13.2025
Father’s Day has a way of pulling old memories to the surface. One that came to mind recently was a phrase my dad used to say whenever someone hadn’t been around in a while:
“I haven’t seen you in a month of Sundays.”
As a kid, I didn’t think much of it — just one of the many sayings my dad seemed to use regularly. But now, with a little more perspective and life behind me, I realize there’s real wisdom in it. It’s a simple way of saying time doesn’t always feel fast, especially when you’re waiting for something that matters. Lately, I’ve seen that same sentiment reflected in the markets.
The past several months have tested investor patience. Volatility has shown up in waves. Market direction has been inconsistent. Uncertainty has a way of producing slow stretches without a clear path ahead. These are the kinds of periods that can challenge even the most seasoned investors, but they’re also the periods where staying grounded matters most.
Patience is Active
When markets are uncertain, the natural impulse is to act. Real patience isn’t without action, it’s choosing not to overreact. This means sticking to a plan that was built to navigate both growth and disruption. Having someone to keep that perspective steady — especially when headlines stir emotion — can make all the difference.
Time Is the Real Advantage
Markets move in cycles. There are stretches that feel slow, or even backwards. The important thing to remember is that over time, consistency wins. The compounding effect, the thing every investor wants working in their favor, doesn’t require perfect timing. It requires presence, and a willingness to stay engaged even when patience wears thin.
Discipline Wins Over Time
A well-built plan isn’t about predicting what happens next, it’s about being prepared for it. That means diversification. Unemotional rebalancing. Staying aligned with your goals. Discipline is what turns uncertain periods into long-term outcomes. It’s not always easy, but it’s what works.
As Father’s Day approaches, I can’t help but smile at how a phrase I heard in childhood continues to guide me not just as a person, but as an advisor. I find myself thinking about the lessons that truly last: the ones passed down quietly, through presence more than words. Lessons about steadiness, patience, responsibility, and showing up when it matters. That same quiet strength we often see in our fathers is what guides smart investing too. It’s not about rushing. It’s not about reacting. It’s about having the courage to stay committed, even when the way forward isn’t clear, through those months of Sundays. Just like a good father’s example, a thoughtful plan carried out with care and consistency has a way of making a lasting impact over time.
What phrases do you remember your dad using regularly that still bring a smile to your face?
