Finding Your "Why" This Holiday Season

The holidays are right around the corner. For most of us, that means great meals, time with family, and the familiar rhythm of traditions that make this time of year special. But it also means work; for the ones who plan the gatherings, cook the meals, and make the magic happen.

It’s easy to get lost in the logistics. The shopping lists, travel plans, and social calendars can turn something meant to bring joy into a checklist of obligations. When that happens, it helps to pause and remember why we do all of it in the first place.

For many, it’s the reminder of Christmas itself, a celebration grounded in hope, faith, and the story that gives this season its meaning. For you, it may be the smile when a loved one opens the perfect gift. It may be the warmth that comes from a family tradition that’s been passed down for generations. Whatever your reason, the meaning behind those moments is what makes them worth the effort.

The same idea applies to your financial life.

The Wall Street Journal recently highlighted families who create mission statements to stay focused on what matters most. It’s a way to recenter, to ensure that decisions about money align with shared values and long-term purpose.

At Rather & Kittrell, we take a similar approach. When we sit down with clients during our discovery process, we don’t start with numbers or investment strategies. We start with a question: Why?

That simple beginning allows us to ask more detailed questions because surface-level information doesn’t tell the full story. Why do you want to grow your wealth? Why are you saving, investing, or planning for the future? The answers are always deeply personal; providing for children, peace of mind for your spouse, giving back to the community, or creating freedom to spend time where it matters most. Once that “why” is clear, everything else begins to make sense.

Discovery is not a formality. It’s the heart of our planning work. Financial plans built around a clear purpose tend to endure. They give meaning to the day-to-day decisions and help families stay aligned when markets or life circumstances change. The “why” becomes a guide, reminding you what the money is for and what success really looks like.

This holiday season, as you gather with family or spend time reflecting on the year ahead, take a moment to think about your own “why.” If you’ve never written a family mission statement, consider it. It doesn’t have to be formal or complex, just a few sentences that capture what’s most important to you and how you want your resources to serve those priorities.

If you already have one, revisit it. Does it still reflect your goals, values, and the kind of life you want to live?

The holidays are a natural time to slow down, reconnect, and remember what matters most. Whether you’re cooking, hosting, giving, or simply enjoying the company of others, keep your “why” close.

It’s the best way to ensure your time, energy, and resources are creating the kind of season, and the kind of life, that truly reflects what you value most.
