Finding Your Why
RK talks about what guides us in life and how to incorporate that into financial decisions.
Our lives are a series of transitions. When people face these major transitions—retirement, the sale of a business, the death of a spouse— they often come to RK.
Find your Why
One question we encourage our clients to ask is, “Why does my money matter?” If you had no money, what would matter in your life? What if you had a month to live? These are blunt topics, but critical in helping clients arrive at what really matters. Honing in on what matters most is the first step in planning. That’s why we think in terms of life planning, rather than financial planning.
Once you’ve built a life plan around your “why,” don’t get too comfortable. In a complicated world, that plan will likely change as soon as you write it. While you can’t control the changes life throws at you, you can control how you react by following a flexible road map that continually aligns your values and resources. As the great philosopher and boxer Mike Tyson once said, “Everybody has a plan, until they get punched in the mouth.”
RK helps you roll with the punches, as part of your team, alongside your tax professional and trusted attorney, to coordinate a strategy. Of course, no one can make perfect decisions every time, but you will make decisions based on who you are and what you want, from the inside out.
Our process for helping clients manage personal wealth begins with learning where you are, where you would like to be and what
gaps exist. Investing should align your unique objectives with the appropriate amount of risk through an intentional, disciplined, unemotional portfolio management process for when capital markets fluctuate.
As with individual clients, we follow the same process in managing the retirement plans of some of the region’s most valuable businesses.
