Places To Go Along the Trans-America Trail

Places To Go Along the Trans-America Trail

From their starting point in Nags Head, NC, to the Pacific Ocean in Fort Orford, OR, Pat and Jeff traveled a mix of off-road and pavement along the 6,100 miles of the Trans-America Trail. Mississippi pharmacist Sam Correro created the TAT to be the ultimate off-road adventure.

Warm Springs to Wytheville, VA

After crossing the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are rocky climbs, slippery gravel trails and challenging off-road sections, including Tubb Run. Scenic one-lane roads run through beautiful valleys and alongside rivers.

Warloop Road, AR

While some of the Warloop Road is paved, the rest is a rough and rocky trail with downhill rock stairstep sections (going east to west). It’s a difficult ride for heavy bikes loaded with gear.

Prairie City, ID

In tiny Prairie City, a mahogany and rosewood carving of “Two Virgins” anchors the Oxbow Bar. The 1879 carving traveled by sailing ship and riverboat from Italy to St. Louis, MO, where it was incorporated into the bar, then traveled down river, made a nine-month, 21,000-mile journey around Cape Horn, finally finding its way by sternwheeler, ferry, train and horse drawn wagon to Prairie City.

Silverton, UT

The approach through Cinnamon Pass is highly technical, steep and rocky, with spectacular views at 12, 640 feet and switchbacks both ascending and descending. After Silverton, the Ophir Pass is a dramatic shelf road with steep ascent to 11,789 feet and challenging descent on large rocks.

Arches National Park, Moab, UT

One of Utahs’s Mighty 5 parks, Arches is the home of magnificent red-rock formations. With more than 2000 arches, it also has massive balanced rocks, soaring spires and incredible contrasting colors—not to mention unforgettable sunsets.

Bonneville Salt Flats, West Wendover, NV

Travel at high speeds on a smooth table of salt in this historic site, where multiple land speed records have been broken. More than 30,000 acres, the Salt Flats are one of the most unique natural wonders in Utah.

Crater Lake, OR

The deepest volcanic lake in the world, at 1943 feet, this deep blue lake is filled with rainwater and runoff from melting snow, filling in the shell of Mount Mazama, a dormant volcano.

Port Orford, OR

This spot on the Pacific Ocean marks the western end of the TAT, 6,100 miles from the starting point at Nags Head, NC.
