How Do I Prepare to Spend When I’m Not Earning in Retirement?
I’m Jay Slagle, and I’m a Senior Advisor at Rather and Kittrell.
We’re fortunate to be in a position to have long-term relationships with our clients. Often, these happen well before they transition to retirement, and the one question that we get asked, universally, with those who are leaving the comfort of accumulation mode, into disstribution mode, where they’re living off their saved assets, is “how do I replace my paycheck?”
And as someone who likes to know how things work, I have a great deal of empathy for that question. What are the mechanics of replacing a paycheck?
I think what’s underlying that question is usually:
- Which accounts do I pull from?
- When do I take Social Security?
- How do I mitigate taxes, and
- How do electronic phone transfers work?
The short answer is, we send money to our clients at whatever cadence they feel comfortable with, in the most tax-efficient manner possible.
